Paris 2024 Torch Relay run into Lille: SSF & ISF joined the spectacular Olympic light journey toward Paris

04.07.2024

The excitement for the Paris 2024 Olympics continues to build as the iconic Olympic torch makes its way through France in a breathtaking relay. This historic journey not only symbolizes the unity and spirit of the Games but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of France.

Adding to the significance of this event, Diane de Navacelle de Coubertin, Director of the School Sport Foundation (SSF), was present at the ceremony of lightning in Greece as well as in France.
Her presence underscored the importance of educational sports and the continuation of the Olympic legacy established by her ancestor, Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games. Diane de Navacelle de Coubertin’s participation highlighted the bridge between the origins of the Olympics and their future, as embodied by the youth involved in school sports today.

The lighting ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics began with a traditional and symbolic ceremony in Olympia, Greece. This ancient site, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, saw the torch lit by the rays of the sun, igniting the flame that would travel across continents to reach its final destination. From Greece, the flame was transported to France, where it commenced its relay journey, traversing the nation and touching countless lives along the way.

A Momentous Occasion in Lille

On July 3rd, 2024, the torch relay arrived in Lille, marking a memorable day in the journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympics. Laurent PetrynkaPresident of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), had the honor of carrying the torch through the city. Petrynka’s involvement underscores the importance of sport in education and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.

Accompanying Petrynka was Roman Greba, the President of the School Sport Foundation (SSF). Greba’s presence highlighted the collaborative efforts in promoting sports among the youth, further emphasizing the spirit of unity that the Olympics aim to foster.

Their participation in the torch relay was a testament to their commitment to the development of school sports and the nurturing of young talent.

Starting from Marseille, the torch has passed through significant cities and regions, each celebrating the relay with their unique local flair. The flame journeyed through Lyon, known for its vibrant cultural scene, Bordeaux, with its world-renowned vineyards, and Nantes, a city steeped in history. These cities, among many others, have hosted the torch with festivities that reflect their heritage and community spirit.

The Grand Arrival in Paris

The torch relay is set to culminate in a grand arrival in Paris, just in time for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The flame is expected to reach the French capital on July 26, 2024. The final leg of the journey will see the torch making its way through the iconic streets of Paris, passing landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, and the Arc de Triomphe, before finally arriving at the Stade de France.
