The Athlete’s Journal – Why Writing Down Your Training Makes You Better

26.03.2025

What If Your Sports Journal Was Your Secret Superpower?

Ever wish you had a way to track how much you’ve improved? Or a place to write down how awesome you felt after scoring that goal? Say hello to your Athlete’s Journal—the ultimate tool to help you grow, stay motivated, and celebrate every step of your sports journey!

At the School Sport Foundation (SSF), we believe that sports aren’t just about playing—they’re about learning, growing, and becoming your best self. And guess what? Writing it all down can make you better.

1. Track Your Progress Like a Pro

Keeping a journal helps you see how far you’ve come. You might forget that two months ago you couldn’t do 10 push-ups—and now you can do 20!

✅ What to write:

  • What sport you practiced
  • What skills or drills you worked on
  • How long you trained
  • One thing you improved today

Seeing your progress in writing keeps you motivated and proud of how much you’ve grown!

2. Celebrate Your Small Wins

Every great athlete knows that small wins lead to big victories. Writing down your wins—big or small—makes you feel confident and excited to keep going!

✅ Write down things like:

  • “I made my first goal!”
  • “I ran for 5 minutes without stopping!”
  • “I remembered the whole yoga flow today!”

You’ll be surprised how these tiny moments build your inner champion.

3. Learn From the Tough Days

Not every practice or game goes perfectly—and that’s okay! Your journal can help you learn from challenges and come back stronger.

✅ Try writing:

  • What didn’t go well
  • How you felt about it
  • One thing you’ll do differently next time

Being honest about hard days helps you grow mentally and build resilience, just like a real athlete.

4. Set Goals and Smash Them

Your Athlete’s Journal is the perfect place to write down your goals and keep track of your progress.

✅ Examples:

  • “By the end of the month, I want to do 15 push-ups in a row.”
  • “This week, I’ll practice my dribbling every day for 10 minutes.”

Each time you reach a goal, check it off—and celebrate like a champion!

5. Make It Fun and Personal!

Your journal should feel like YOU! Decorate it, add stickers, draw your favorite moves, or even write a funny story about your practice. It’s your space to express yourself and make sports even more fun!

✅ Ideas:

  • Use colored pens and emojis
  • Draw how you felt during training
  • Add a “highlight of the week” section
